Jannik the Rysh

Rysh

Warmage

Known at this time as Jannik the Jolly, he is a Vorean minstrel trapped in Terrihall when the gurvani overrun it. Branded like the rest of the Dead God's reluctant servants, he lives only because his music amuses his captors. Minalan and his company rescue him on their raid into the occupied country, and he peels off his false brand the moment he is safely among friends, begging to be taken away from the fucking madman running the place.

Once freed, Jannik proves an excellent traveling companion. He is a trained tenor with a keen ear for gossip and local terrain, having worked a circuit from Wenshar to the Minden Range for years. He sings rousing verses of the Lords' valour on the outbound leg and somber elegies after the refugees begin streaming south. By the end of the campaign he has attached himself firmly to Minalan's company, foreshadowing his later appointment as Herald and intelligencer of Sevendor.

Arcanist

Jannik the Rysh is introduced in Arcanist as Minalan's Court Bard, Herald, and covert intelligence operative. A silver-tongued performer with a sharp mind for intrigue, Jannik serves as both a public face of the Sevendor court and a quiet collector of secrets. Minalan grants him Cartrefygan as a seat, formalizing his place in the Magelaw's power structure. Without a speck of magical ability himself, Jannik proves that wit and words can be as powerful as any witchstone.

Footwizard

Jannik is cited as Minalan's counterintelligence officer in the Magelaw, providing the context through which Rardine's Family intelligence network is understood. Minalan fondly recalls his "filthy little ditties" from drinking nights, and deliberately tries to remember Perwyneese ancestral melodies learned from Lilastien so that he can later teach them to Jannik. References to him as a master of human music recur during the Avius dragon expedition.

Hedgewitch

Jannik is a fixture of Minalan's Vanador inner circle, seated at strategy dinners with Terleman, Mavone, Astyral, and Heeth. Discussing Karakush, he speculates on the Nemovort's plans from a dramatist's point of view: "a sinister plan makes a better story." He volunteers intelligence insight for the raid on Karakush's Westland bases.

Marshal Arcane

A brief but telling mention. Minalan orders Jannik up to the keep to play music and calm a nervous patient β€” a small demonstration of how the Rysh's practical role at court now includes everything from counterintelligence to bedside care. Heeth the Butler telepathically heralds his arrival at Azar's bachelor gathering.

Preceptor

Jannik is among the Wilderlands wizards at the opening of the new Arcane Orders hall in Vanador, quietly described as "some sort of Wilderlands minstrel Minalan had hired while she was in the south." He is also present, telepathically announced by Heeth, at Azar's bachelor gathering.

Practical Adept

Jannik's role as an elite spymaster crystallizes. Minalan notes he "had worked with Mavone, Astyral, and Azar for years behind enemy lines in the Penumbra," with unparalleled ability to infiltrate and observe.

A unique Snowstone-induced Talent is finally revealed and described: Jannik can create up to six perfect thought-form copies of himself, each indistinguishable from the original, which transmit their memories back to him upon reabsorption or death. Taren has examined this sport Talent in detail. Minalan uses Jannik's copies across many simultaneous operations β€” a single Rysh functioning as a whole intelligence service.
